Description:
Rubber tips Rubber tips on ambulation aids prevent slipping and provide some shock absorption. Most tips for canes and walkers are 2 to 3 cm in diameter; tips for crutches are 4 cm. The undersurface of the tip is usually concave, with a variety of tread patterns, usually concentric rings or studs. The superiority of one design or diameter over another has not been established. The universal (or crab) tip is flexible at its attachment to the aid, which allows the tip to remain flat on the floor or ground even when the aid is placed at extreme angles.9 Despite these advantages, this type of tip is seldom prescribed, probably because of the additional weight and expense. Tips can be winterized to improve traction on snow and ice, although some manual dexterity and balance is necessary to engage the retractable or removable metal tips.
