Neutrogena

Johnson & Johnson's Neutrogena will spend $18 million on the January launch of its new line of shampoo and conditioners, Neutrogena Clean, which breaks out of its specialty treatment line of shampoos and conditioners even as it plots its most ambitious new product entry into the acne treatment category.

The company will use the ad onslaught to establish Clean as a more beauty-oriented mass market line positioned for everyday use, versus the more clinical messages for Neutrogena's therapeutic specialty haircare products. Full page print ads for Neutrogena Clean are scheduled to break in early 1999 in magazines including Glamour, Seventeen, YM, Teen, Mademoiselle, Jane, Allure, Vogue, Elle and Cosmopolitan, with TV spots scheduled throughout 1999 during prime time and Saturday morning programming. A 44 million circulation FSI is slated for Feb. 28, offering $1 off the product, with three more scheduled during the year.

Neutrogena's new Body Clear Body Wash, medicated with salicylic acid to prevent breakouts, will be touted as the only body wash to help treat and prevent breakouts on the body, creating a new "acne body care" subsegment, which almost 40% of acneprone teens suffer from, according to Neutrogena trade materials.

J&J has begun pitching dermatologists and will continue sampling with them through March, and national sampling to teens is to start in January, along with Web site information and TV and print ads. Ads will paint the product as a refreshing lather that does not leave the skin overly-dry or irritated. Also in the acne/body mix will be a Neutrogena Acne Body Lotion, all on the heel of a new oil-free cream acne facial wash. Actress Jennifer Love-Hewitt continues as spokeswoman.  Medical Supply.
