One intriguing method for unloading weight-bearing structures is the use of a small force applied through a long lever arm. 2When a patient uses a cane in the opposite hand, the hip abductors need not act as strongly; this reduces the forces across the hip joint to less than half the normal, depending on the amount of force exerted on the cane. A trunk lurched toward the affected hip can also reduce the forces by moving the center of mass closer to the axis of rotation (reducing the lever arm); however, a lurch decreases the efficiency of walking and adversely affects the lumbar spine and knee joint.
